Unexpected Uses For Petroleum

How DynaQuip Provides Resources for a Wide Variety of Customers and Applications

Ancient Chinese records indicate that petroleum was first used as a fuel for home heating purposes as early as the 4th Century BC. Today, petroleum is still used for heating and electricity purposes and is also the primary source of transportation fuels that power the majority of vehicles throughout the world.

But did you know there is much more to the petroleum story than vehicle fuel, and heating and electricity generation? Just as DynaQuip has continued to evolve our durable flow control and fluid connector products (including for petroleum processing), the petroleum industry has also continued to find new applications, including a few you might not expect.

Four Uses of Petroleum You Might Not Know

  • Contact lenses – In the early days of contacts, the lenses were made of a hard, rigid plastic that were made to fit (somewhat uncomfortably) in the top and bottom eyelids. In the 1970s, soft contacts became more mainstream, fitting directly on the eyeball and in a much more comfortable fashion thanks to their more flexible and permeable qualities. This was all made possible by petroleum products.
  • Guitar strings – Most modern guitar strings are made of nylon, which contains petroleum as a key element. Nylon has become the string of choice from rock stars to garage bands who are looking for a material that performs well, is appealing to the touch, and is dependable and durable.
  • Medicine – Petroleum is used as a sealing agent for certain capsules, pills, and medicines in the pharmaceutical market. These petrochemicals include antihistamines, antibacterials, cough syrups, salves and ointments, vitamins, and gels such as prescription soaps and hand sanitizers.
  • Clothing – In addition to nylon, petroleum is a key ingredient in acrylics, polyester, and Spandex based materials. These types of clothing materials are widely recognized for their comfort and durability characteristics, and are typically in low-cost, high-quality materials that companies depend on for manufacturing their clothing products.
