Valve Maintenance for
Summer Heat

Hot summer months can put extra strain on valves—especially in industrial, HVAC, irrigation, and water systems—due to higher temperatures, thermal expansion, and increased usage. Here are some practical valve maintenance tips tailored for the heat:

General Maintenance Tips

  • Inspect Seals and Gaskets: Heat can cause rubber and synthetic seals to degrade faster. Check for cracks, hardening or brittleness, and leaks around the valve stem or body.
  • Lubricate Moving Parts: High temperatures can dry out lubricants. Use heat-resistant lubricants and check stem threads, gears (for gear-operated valves), and seals (if lubricant is compatible).
  • Check for Thermal Expansion: Piping and valve bodies expand with heat. Make sure there’s enough clearance between components, support brackets allow for thermal movement, and connections aren’t overstressed.
  • Tighten Bolts Carefully: Heat cycles may cause bolts to loosen. But overtightening can warp valve bodies or damage gaskets, so torque to spec.
  • Monitor Valve Performance: Look for increased operating torque, sticking or sluggish valve movement, and unusual noise or vibration.

Special Tips for High-Temperature Applications

  • Use Heat-Resistant Materials: Consider upgrading seals or packing to materials like RTFE, graphite, or Viton if valves regularly operate in high heat.
  • Insulate Where Appropriate: Insulation can protect both valves and workers, especially on steam or hot water systems.
  • Protect Pneumatic/Hydraulic Actuators: Heat can impact air and fluid pressure systems; shield or ventilate actuators if needed.

Outdoor and Irrigation Systems

  • Flush Debris Frequently: Heat increases algae and scale growth in water systems—flush valves and strainers regularly.
  • Protect from UV Exposure: Sun can degrade plastic/rubber valves—use UV-resistant covers or paint.
  • Check Automatic Valves: Solenoids and electronics can fail more often in heat—test and replace faulty units early.
